California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) vetoed a bill that would banned the use of "Redskins" by public schools in the state.
"Administrative decisions regarding athletic team names, nicknames or mascots should be retained at the local level," Schwarzenegger said in his written veto statement [PDF].
AB 13, the California Racial Mascots Act, was sponsored by Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg, a Democrat, and applied only to the "Redskins" name. She introduced it after a broader bill to limit the use of Indian mascots was vetoed by Schwarzenegger.
