Controversial professor Ward Churchill would receive less than $1 million under a buyout deal reached with the University of Colorado, The Denver Post reports.

Details are sketchy but sources told the paper that Churchill will settle for as little as $500,000 so long as the school does not challenge his academic record. The deal could also include benefits and other costs.

Churchill has come under scrutiny for an essay about the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. His claims of Indian ancestry have also been disputed.
