The U.S. Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command have eliminated the use of Indian terms as part of their military exercises, Indian Country Today reports.

Words like "warrior," "brave" and "Indian" have been dropped and replaced with non-ethnic terms. The words had been in use since the 1970s.

The decision came in a military memo around the same time the NCAA announced its mascot policy but a spokesperson said the timing was a coincidence.
