The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to oppose a second land-into-trust application by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.
A letter to the Bureau of Indian Affairs cites the loss of tax revenue if the 5.81 acres is taken off the local property tax rolls. If the land is developed, the county could receive about $5.5 million over 10 years, the county estimates.
The county previously voted to work with the tribe on an acquisition of 6.9 acres. A deal has yet to be reached so the county decided to support a challenge to the application that is pending before the Interior Board of Indian Appeals.
