A Meskwaki woman met leaders of the Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa last week and urged them not to intervene in the adoption proceedings of her 2-month old son.
Kelly Buffalo, 22, said she wants her son, Braven, to be adopted by a non-Native couple. She said she doesn't want the tribe to decide what's best for her child.
The tribe intervened in state court proceedings after learning of the adoption. The case was then transferred to tribal court, where a judge ruled that Buffalo must obtain tribal consent.
