High rate of Indian adoptions in Iowa protested

Iowa child welfare officials promised to look into high rates of adoptions and loss of parental rights among American Indians.

Indian leaders met with Gov. Tom Vilsack and Department of Human Services director Kevin Concannon to discuss child welfare issues. They said the state is taking Indian children out of Indian homes.

Concannon said there is a disproportionate number of Indian kids in the system. He said a redesign of the child welfare system will address Indian issues.
