A Hopi accountant told producers for the ABC television show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" that Lori Piestewa, the Hopi woman who was killed in action in Iraq, was not Hopi, The Arizona Republic reports.
Lori's father is Hopi and she is enrolled in the tribe as is her 6-year-old daughter, Carla. But Harold Dawavendewa, an accountant for the Hopi village of Upper Moenkopi, said Lori is not Hopi because her mother is Hispanic, and Hopi is matrilineal society.
The role of the Upper Moenkopi village has become an issue because the TV show is building a new home for the Piestewa family in Flagstaff rather than on the reservation. The village had approved a site for the home, The Republic reports.
The TV show also offered to build a veterans center in the village, where Lori is buried. But the program instead went to the Navajo Nation due to the "unresponsive and uncooperative attitudes" of village leaders, the paper said.
The veterans center was dedicated on Monday. The TV show is not getting involving in the naming of the facility.
