MONDAY, APRIL 21, 2003 Shauna Wood: "Let's try to make the renaming of Squaw Peak to Piestewa Peak positive for Arizonans because we are recognizing one of our own and continuing to remember the many American souls lost during this war." John Decker: "I have lived most of the last 36 years in the same house, with a view from my back yard of Squaw Peak and, political correctness and expedience be damned, it will remain Squaw Peak to me!" Carole Ridley: "These people bellyaching about changing a name from Squaw Peak to Piestewa Peak ought to open a book or two to remember what American Indians have been and are going through." Bruce G. Levitta: "With her hasty decision regarding the naming of Squaw Peak, Gov. Janet Napolitano may have just slipped off the mountain, so to speak, as to her future aspirations for federal office." Howard Hood: "Let's change the name of The Arizona Republic to The Piestewa Daily News and the entire state will be able to honor her memory on a daily basis." Carole V. Bartholomeaux: "While I am considered an Anglo, I was the only "non-Native American" to serve on the Indian Health Advisory Board representing all of Arizona's Indian tribes in the late 1970s. To me, squaw was not derogatory. I still do not think it is. However, we now have a heroine who can be a role model for young Native American women who desperately need a role model." Amanda Fleming: "There is absolutely no good reason not to change the name from one demeaning Native American women to one immortalizing a (Native) American hero." Get the Story:
