Several Supreme Court justices seemed to question on Wednesday whether they should force a water district in Florida to stop pumping dirty water into the Miccosukee Tribe's homelands.
According to news reports, a majority were worried about the national implications. Two justices -- Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer -- appeared to agree with the tribe's stance.
The tribe argues that the South Florida Water Management District needs a federal permit to move polluted water into the Everglades. The district, supported by the Bush administration, says it isn't creating any new pollution that requires a Clean Water Act permit.
The tribe won at the federal court and circuit court levels. A decision is expected by this summer.
