The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma met privately with attorneys for New York Gov. George Pataki (R) to discuss a settlement of the Cayuga land claim.
According to news reports, the tribe would drop its claim in exchange for a casino in the Catskills. The tribe has already struck an "exclusive" deal with Empire Resorts, a gaming company, for a casino there.
The Cayuga Nation also has its eyes on the Catskills, with Empire as a partner. A lawyer for the Cayugas said Empire would be in breach of contract if its goes with the Seneca-Cayugas.
Nearly three years ago, Pataki signed a law allowing up to three casinos in the Catkills. But no project has gained final approval. The St. Regis Mohawks are the farthest along in the process.
