Mayoral hopeful open to Tohono O'odham Nation casino plan

Glendale, Arizona, mayoral candidate Walter Opaska is open to the Tohono O'odham Nation casino, unlike his rival, the incumbent Elaine Scruggs.

Walter Opaska, an attorney and former software engineer, said the city should at least talk to the tribe. He is worried that litigation, which has already cost more than $1 million, will end in failure.

“While I do not like the method that the Tohono O’odham nation used to acquire the land in Glendale, we need to put Glendale first and talk to the tribe regarding the casino,” Opaska told The Phoenix Business Journal.

In contrast, Scruggs has refused to meet the tribe. The election takes place in 2012.
