Press conference for bill to block Tohono O'odham Nation casino

A press conference is being held this morning to discuss H.R.2938, the Gila Bend Indian Reservation Lands Replacement Clarification Act.

The bill bars the Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona from opening a casino on land acquired in connection with the Gila Bend Indian Reservation Lands Replacement Act of 1986. It was introduced yesterday by Rep. Trent Franks (R-Arizona) and it has four co-sponsors -- all Republicans.

Franks will discuss the bill today along with Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs, who opposes the tribe's proposal for the West Valley Resort. Diane Enos, the president of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, will also speak at the press conference.
