The House Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs will hold a hearing next Tuesday, October 4, on H.R.2938, a bill that stops the Tohono O'odham Nation of
Arizona from building an off-reservation casino.
Rep. Trent Franks
(R-Arizona) introduced the bill on September 15. It modifies the Gila Bend Indian Reservation Lands Replacement Act of 1986 by barring gaming on newly acquired land.
Otherwise, the tribe would be entitled to open a casino on 135 acres near Glendale. The project is controversial and has generated opposition among politicians and some tribes in Arizona.
The bill five co-sponsors. All are Republicans, except for Rep. Dale Kildee (D-Michigan), the co-chair of the Congressional Native American Caucus.
The hearing will take place at 2pm in Room 1324 of the Longworth House Office Building.
