Aaron Payment, the prominent leader of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, is losing his national positions after being censured by his board of directors. 
It’s a big day for Bryan Newland, who has been nominated to serve as the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs in the Joe Biden administration.
“The violence perpetrated against Indigenous women and girls is an epidemic that requires our attention and urgent action,” said Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Arizona), Chair of the House Committee on Natural Resources.
The thirty-five tribal nations from the Midwest Alliance of Sovereign Tribes stand in support of Bryan Newland to serve as Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs in the Biden administration.
“I’ll fight tirelessly to represent our tribal communities and our tribes with honor,” Georgene Louis says as she seeks to fill the shoes of a fellow Pueblo trailblazer.
Indian Country is celebrating after turning out in record numbers for one of the most consequential presidential elections in American history.
