Yellow Bird: Deer encounters Part 2

MONDAY, JANUARY 13, 2003 "I have to do some backpedaling on my Tuesday deer column . Here it is: First, don't swerve around a deer in the road. And second, thosedeer-alert devices are about as good as a Darth Vader toy on your car hood. In my column, I said my daughter swerved and missed a deer in the road. Since then, some experts told me that swerving not only causes overcorrection (which could result in a rollover, especially if you are driving a sport utility vehicle that is too top-heavy), but also you could go off the road and hit a solid object such as a tree. A deer, a retired highway patrolman told me, is leggy and doesn't weigh much. Usually - remember, there are always exceptions to the rule - the deer will just dent your bumper, he said." Get the Story:
