The Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA), formerly known as the Native American Journalists Association, boasts a board of directors consisting almost entirely of women.
Voting for IJA’s board took place virtually and in person last month. Members of the organization elected two new directors — Alyssa London (Tlingit) and Roselynn Yazzie (Shoshone-Bannock / Diné) — and re-elected Angel Ellis (Muscogee Nation), according to a news release on Thursday.
London, Yazzie and Ellis join five women already on the board, bringing the total number of women directors to eight. The IJA board consists of nine members.
Additionally, during a special board meeting, IJA appointed positions on the executive committee. All four slots are held by women:
- Christine Trudeau (Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation), President
- Jourdan Bennett-Begaye (Diné), Vice President
- Angel Moore (Peguis First Nation), Treasurer
- Shondiin Silversmith (Diné), Secretary
IJA, which adopted its new name following an election in 2023, recently concluded its Indigenous Media Conference. The event took place July 25-27 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.Thank you to everyone who attended the 2024 Indigenous Media Conference!! Your presence made this event truly remarkable.
