Last Thursday the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs (SCIA) announced Senate passage of their amendment to reauthorize the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA) to be included with the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) as part of an 86-11 vote. Legislation to reauthorize NAHASDA has been introduced every Congress since 2013.

From Chairman Brian Schatz (D-HI) “NAHASDA is a critical housing law for American Indians, Native Hawaiians, and Alaska Natives, this amendment is an important win for Native communities to address their urgent housing needs. NAHASDA reauthorization has gone through regular order and been well-studied for years. I thank Vice Chairman Murkowski for her partnership in moving this priority forward through Committee and now the full Senate.”

SCIA Vice Chair Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) added “I’m pleased the Senate has overwhelmingly agreed to add our amendment to reauthorize and reform the Native American Housing and Self-Determination Act to this year’s NDAA. In my home state of Alaska and in Native communities across the country, housing shortages and overcrowding are plaguing families, particularly as they try to overcome rising interest rates, rents, and construction costs. I thank my Senate colleagues for supporting this amendment, as well as the many tribal leaders and organizations who have long supported this important bipartisan legislation. The U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration shared that the Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program (TBCP) has opened a second Notice of Funding Opportunity (TBCP2) for eligible Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian entities. The TBCP2 funding opportunity is approximately $980 million for new deployment of Internet infrastructure, affordability programs, telehealth, distance learning initiatives, and digital inclusion efforts which will assist in further closing the digital divide in Indian Country.

In alignment with this second NOFO, and Tribal Consultation, NTIA will help applicants, by providing Technical Assistance during the 6-month application window, which closes January 23, 2024.

As part of their outreach and technical assistance, they invite participation in the first webinar offered focused on the TBCP2 funding opportunity, highlighting points for new and returning applicants alike:

The Enterprise Controller is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating complete financial functions for assigned Tribal corporations, enterprises and authorities under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer.

The position oversees the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records and internal controls and helps ensure that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles. It supports the department goals of managing financial risks, complying with regulatory oversight responsibilities, and meeting targeted financial goals and budgets.
