The House Committee on Natural Resources is holding a markup on two bills of interest in Indian Country.
The first is H.R.1884, the Save Oak Flat Act. The bill permanently protects Oak Flat, a sacred Apache site in Arizona, from being used for a massive copper mine.
A hearing took place on April 13. Leaders from the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona and the National Congress of American Indians testified in support of the legislation, which has broad backing in Indian Country, as well as from the San Carlos Apache Tribe and the Apache Stronghold group.
The second item of interest is H.R.443, the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Land Transfer Act. The bill authorizes the Indian Health Service to convey property to the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium in order to expand health care for Native people in Anchorage, Alaska. Prior versions of the bill have been approved by the committee and the legislation almost made it over the finish line in the last session of Congress. Similar property conveyances have been approved for other tribal health organizations in Alaska. A total of nine bills are on the schedule for the markup, which takes place at 11am Eastern on Wednesday. The session will be streamed on YouTube and on Facebook. For those who can’t watch the webcast or for those who want to listen to the markup together, Indianz.Com is hosting a room on Clubhouse, the audio-based platform. Anyone who wants to join Clubhouse can so do by following the Indianz.Com Club on the platform and setting up an account.
