"The nickname controversy and its only solution just became clearer, now that House Speaker Al Carlson, R-Fargo, has said that efforts to repeal North Dakota’s new Fighting Sioux nickname law are “not even on the table yet.”

Though I am neutral on the nickname, I want to be able to watch the best possible sporting competition in the future. I also want a state government that does its job within the constraints provided in the North Dakota Constitution.

But the nickname is not the question that should be addressed at this time. Instead, the question clearly is a constitutional one. It is a question of the separation of powers between the executive and legislative branches of state government."
