Letter: Ask tribes in South Dakota about 'Fighting Sioux' nickname

"I am a proud owner of a 200-year-old Lakota Strong Heart Holy Man’s headdress like the one worn by the man on the horse in front of the Ralph Engelstad Arena as well as Sitting Bull. I also have the title.

I do not speak for all Indians, only the true Fighting Sioux: the Teton Lakota Sioux, all of whom are not in the state of North Dakota, but we are all in the state of South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Cheyenne River and the South Dakota part of the Standing Rock Sioux reservations.

No one has even bothered to ask us how we feel about the Fighting Sioux nickname. We are the ones who fought Custer; we are the true Fighting Sioux, the Teton Lakota of South Dakota.

Ask us, and we would maybe be 100 percent in favor of the statue and the nickname. "
