The Alaska Federation of
Natives funneled a $308,000 donation to an independent expenditure committee that supported Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R)
in her historic write-in
campaign in Alaska.
The donation to Alaskans Standing
Together was the first time AFN has ever entered a political campaign.
But President Julie Kitka declined to identify the source of the funds.
"We just felt for the interests of Native people and interests of the state that we should just jump in," Kitka told The Anchorage Daily News.
Recent federal court decisions cleared the way for independent committees to spend as much money as they want during elections. Alaska Native corporations were behind most of the spending of Alaskans Standing
Together.
