Joe Miller, the Republican
candidate for U.S. Senate in Alaska, says Alaska Native corporations aren't helping their shareholders in rural villages.
Miller, an attorney who has the backing of the Tea Party movement, says most of the revenue generated by the 13 Alaska Native regional corporations goes to subsidiaries and non-Native employees.
“In Anchorage, you have these big shiny buildings,” Miller said at a campaign appearance, The Fairbanks Daily News Miner reported. “But in the villages, you look and it’s just like 40 years ago when (the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act) just passed, and it’s like, what’s up with that?”
Miller said Native corporations are endorsing Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a
Republican who is running as a write-in candidate, because they don't want him to expose "their inner workings.” He says he supports reforms in government contracting programs for tribes, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians.
