Voters in Alaska Native villages overwhelmingly chose Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R) in her historic write-in campaign, The Anchorage Daily News reports.
In District 38 in western Alaska, 74 percent of the vote went to the write-in candidate. In District 30, 70 percent went to the write-in and in District 40, 64 percent favored the write-in.
"The rural vote was absolutely critical to what we hope will be our success,"
spokesperson Steve Wackowski told the paper.
Alaskans Standing
Together, an independent expenditure committee largely funded by Alaska
Native corporations, spent more than $1 million to support Murkowski. They saw her election as critical for Native contracting, health care, law enforcement and other issues.
