Members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah
Nation hope tribal leaders will take action to formally support the controversial "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.
Tribal members backed the name at a referendum in April. But the tribal council has not passed a resolution to support the "Fighting Sioux."
Meanwhile, members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe are trying to organize a referendum of their own. The tribal council already passed a resolution against the name.
The North Dakota Board of Higher
Education gave UND until October 1 to reach an agreement with both tribes to keep the name for another 30 years.
