First tribe receives direct road funding from stimulus
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the first tribal grant of direct road repair funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The Ramah Chapter of the Navajo Nation will use more than $644,000 from the Federal Highway Administration to resurface roads on the reservation. "These funds will make dramatic improvements to some of the most rural roads in the nation, while putting people to work in an economically-distressed area," LaHood said in a press release.

The chapter was one of the first to sign an Indian Reservation Roads (IRR) agreement to work directly with the FHWA, which will receive $310 million in stimulus funds.

The chapter is located in New Mexico.
