Five tribes announced a coalition to oppose the University of California at Berkeley's elimination of a specialized Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act unit.
The Phoebe Hearst Museum created the unit in 2001 to comply with NAGPRA. But the university decided to eliminate it over the objections of several tribes.
The Native American NAGPRA Coalition wants to meet with university officials to discuss the change. They say the decision was urged by archeologists who don't want to see artifacts and ancestors returned to tribes.
The coalition is composed of representatives from the Kashia Pomo Tribe, the Santa Rosa Rancheria Tachi Yokut Tribe, Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians, the Dry Creek Band of Pomo Indians and the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes. Tribal members and elders are also part of the group.
