Native Hawaiians, museum in repatriation fight
Monday, June 2, 2003
The Bishop Museum in Hawaii is asking a Native Hawaiian group to dig up 83 ancestral items from a burial cave. The items were stolen from the cave in 1905 and ended up in the museum's possession. But in February 2000, they were given to the Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawaii Nei, a Native Hawaiian group that reburied them. Now, the museum is asking for the artifacts back. There is also dispute among Native Hawaiian groups as to what to do with them. Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawaii Nei, or Group Caring for the Ancestors of Hawaii, says it won't dig up the items.
