The Senate Indian Affairs Committee on July 28 will hold an oversight hearing on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
One topic on the agenda is a proposed amendment to NAGPRA. It clarifies that the law applies to artifacts and remains of Native Americans that are, or were, indigenous to the United States.
Tribes support the change. But scientists who went to court to study the 9,300-year-old Kennewick Man say it will overturn their victory. The scientists are beginning work on the remains at the University of Washington's Burke Museum today.
