A bill pending in the Utah Legislature expands the state's role in protecting tribal remains found on private land.
The Utah Department of Community and Culture handles repatriation for ancestors found on public lands. But the state doesn't have any funds to take care of remains on private lands.
The bill provides $99,400 for the next two years to help the state. The Senate Workforce Services and Community and Economic Development Committee unanimously approved the measure yesterday.
