The state of New York is refusing to pay the Seneca Nation $2.1 million for a highway that passes through tribal lands.
The New York State Thruway Authorities said the state has already fully compensated the tribe for the use of its land. Back in 1954, the tribe was paid $75,000 for a right-of-way across 300 acres of the Cattaraugus Reservation.
Amid a fight over state taxes on the reservation, the tribe rescinded the right-of-way and imposed a $1-per-car toll on every car on the Thruway. The bill came to $2.1 million for April and May.
