New York governor won't back down from tobacco tax

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) said he won't drop efforts to collect taxes on the sale of tobacco to non-Indians.

Spitzer said he intends to enforce a law that imposes on the tax on reservation. His budget for 2007 estimates revenues of nearly $200 million.

The Seneca Nation says the tax is illegal. The tribe is holding a rally in Buffalo to oppose the state's effort.

Several other states have signed agreements with tribes to share revenues from the sale of tobacco to non-Indians.
