New York lawmakers press state taxation on tribes
Wednesday, April 28, 2004
Two New York lawmakers have introduced a bill to force the state to collect state taxes on reservations. State Sen. Nicholas Spano (R) and Assemblyman Bill Magee (D) claim a billion dollars is being lost on sales by Indian-owned businesses. They say the state can impose taxes on cigarettes and gasoline sold to non-Indians. Gov. George Pataki (R) has refused to collect any tax and the courts have said the state's executive branch has discretion to do so. Earlier this year, he delayed indefinitely a reservation tax plan.
