A 21-year-old man was found guilty of murdering a 13-year-old Native girl in Edmonton, Alberta.
Nina Courtepatte was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and murdered in April 2005. Five people, including three juveniles, were charged in connection with her death.
Michael Briscoe, 36, and Joseph Laboucan, 21, went on trial together. But only Laboucan was convicted of kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault and first-degree murder. Briscoe was acquitted of all charges.
Nina's mother is Native. Peacha Atkinson testified at the victim impact hearing where Laboucan was given a life sentence.
A 19-year-old, who was a juvenile at the time of the crime, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. Another young man is currently on trial while a young woman is to be tried later this year.
