The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska is seeing success with Ho-Chunk Inc., its economic development corporation.
The tribe started HCI with gaming money over 10 years ago. The corporation now boasts $100 million in revenues and businesses in six states, Mexico, Iraq and Afghanistan.
"It's not like we're a rich tribe," CEO Lance Morgan, a tribal member, told the Associated Press. "We're just one of the best of the poor tribes."
To build on the success, the tribe started the Ho-Chunk Community Development Corp., a non-profit organization that has raised $11 million to improve conditions on the reservation.
HCI owns Indianz.Com and its sister e-commerce site, AllNative.Com.
