Richard Turcotte, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, was elected sheriff of Rolette County on Tuesday.
Turcotte easily defeated challenger Christopher Lee, according to unofficial county results.
Turcotte had 57 percent of the vote [Link to Results].
"We as Native people think this is huge," said Rhonda Belgarde, an Indianz.Com reader in North Dakota.
The Turtle Mountain Reservation is located in the northern part of the county.
