The Charles Mix County Commission has started the process of redrawing its voting districts after a federal judge said Native voting rights were being violated.
The county is home to the Yankton Sioux Tribe. But no Native American has even been elected to the county commission, according to the successful lawsuit filed by members of the tribe.
The county is now taking comments on three plans. Plan A creates a district with a 51 percent Indian majority; Plan B creates a district with a 60 percent Indian majority; and Plan C creates a district with a 61 percent Indian majority.
