The Inter-Tribal Indian Club at Montana State University-Billings helped honor Native veterans, past and present, at a ceremony on Monday.
The second annual Gathering of Warriors also paid tribute to non-Native veterans. But speakers highlighted the service of Native Americans, who serve in the military at the highest per capita rates in the nation.
According to current statistics, more than 12,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives are serving in the military. About 42,000 Native Americans live in the nation.
Native Americans have served in all major wars, dating back to the Revolutionary War. About 12,000 enlisted for World War II even though Native Americans weren't considered citizens.
More than 44,000 Native Americans fought in World War II. Another 42,000 served in Vietnam, with 90 percent of them volunteers.
