Five members of the Crow Tribe of Montana are seeking office in Big Horn County.
The slate is running for clerk and recorder, sheriff, attorney, treasurer and justice of the peace. That's five out of the eight elected positions in the county.
'
The campaign prompted the Crow Tribe, for the first time, to endorse candidates for county office. "It's not an Indian-versus-white type of thing. It's just that we feel it's time for us to take that step and take control of our own future," spokesperson Burton Pretty on Top told The Billings Gazette.
In the race for county attorney, Crow member Georgette Hogan is running against incumbent Calvin Wilson, who is Northern Cheyenne.
The resolution passed by the Crow council encourages Native Americans to vote. According to the Gazette, American Indians and Alaska Natives are nearly 60 percent of the county population.
