Turtle Mountain Chippewa election placed in doubt

Members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians of North Dakota are scheduled to go to the polls Tuesday to elect new leaders.

But the results of the October 24 primary have not been certified. The chairwoman of the election board said there were destroyed and discarded ballots so she wants a new primary held.

An independent expert is reviewing the claims. An opinion could be released today.

Incumbent Chairman Ken Davis is running for re-election. He recently suffered a stroke but is doing well, The Grand Forks Herald reported.
