Haskell University president announces retirement

Haskell Indian Nations University President Karen Swisher, the first woman to lead the tribal college in Kansas, announced her retirement on Wednesday.

Swisher, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, came to Haskell in 1996. She has been serving as president for the last seven years and plans to leave in December or January.

Her retirement comes amid cuts to Haskell's budget. This year alone, the school faces a shortfall of more than $1 million.
