Bill supports allotments for Alaska Native veterans

The Alaska House of Representatives voted 38-2 to support efforts in Congress to reopen the allotment process for Alaska Native veterans.

The Native Allotment Act of 1906 expired in 1971 with the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. But Alaska Natives who were serving in the military, particularly those who went to Vietnam, missed the deadline or weren't informed of their eligibility.

Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) introduced H.R.1811 to reopen the process for veterans who between 1964 and 1975. They would be allowed to select allotments in traditional areas and in the Tongass National Forest.

A companion bill, S.2000, was introduced by Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska).
