The Department of Housing and Urban Development's Section 184 Indian Housing Loan Guarantee Program is helping Native Americans in urban areas realize the dream of homeownership.
The program was initially restricted to tribal members who live on reservations. But the Bush administration has approved requests by tribes in Colorado, Oregon, Arizona, Florida, Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin to open the loans to tribal members living off reservations.
Section 184 has been a great success, federal officials and tribal leaders say. HUD's goal for this year is to close 1,000 loans.
