Bush has no time frame, cost on Yucca Mountain

The Bush administration doesn't know when it can open the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste facility in Nevada and may never be able to estimate the cost, Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman said on Monday.

The facility was supposed to open in 1998 but numerous delays have pushed it back to 2012 at the earliest. The cost of the facility could be at least $60 billion.

Yucca Mountain, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, is located on Western Shoshone land that was never ceded by treaty or federal law. A number of Western Shoshone tribes are in driving distance of the facility.
