One Nation met with McCain, Kyl and Frist staff

One Nation United, a group opposed to tribal sovereignty, met with staff for Republican Sens. John McCain, Jon Kyl and Majority Leader Bill Frist, The Gallup Independent reports.

The discussion was the Native Hawaiian recognition bill, which One Nation opposes. A Kyl spokesperson claimed the bill "would have been an abuse of the tribal sovereignty doctrine" even though the National Congress of American Indians, the Alaska Federation of Natives and other tribes support it.

The spokesperson said the meeting doesn't mean Kyl supports anti-Indian groups. But Kyl senior staffer Joseph Matal is scheduled to speak at One Nation's upcoming conference in Washington, D.C.
