Oklahoma tribal leaders had tough questions for Republican gubernatorial candidate Ernest Istook, who has taken controversial stances on taxation, sovereignty and land-into-trust as a member of the U.S. House.
Istook said he respects tribal sovereignty. But he said there will be "friction and ill will" because tribes can do things that non-Indians cannot do, The Native American Times reported.
Tribal leaders also questioned Istook because he met with One Nation, a group fighting tribes on various issues.
As a member of the House, Istook sponsored a bill that would take land out of trust if tribes do not collect state taxes. He supports a moratorium on federal recognition and opposes tobacco deals incumbent Gov. Brad Henry (D) signed with tribes.
