The Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council is calling on the Bush administration to appoint an Indian to run the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The assistant secretary position has been vacant for more than a year following the resignation of Dave Anderson. The BIA is currently in the hands of two non-Indian political appointees who were not confirmed by the Senate.
The Montana and Wyoming tribes passed their resolution the day before Interior Secretary Gale Norton announced her resignation.
