Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Montana) blamed the news media for running unsubstantiated allegations about his relationship with confessed felon Jack Abramoff.
Burns said he has no way of disproving that he isn't under investigation by the Department of Justice. He said the allegation originated with his Democratic opponents.
Burns is running for re-election and said he is committed to the race. But Roll Call, a Washington, D.C., newspaper, said there is speculation that he may drop out.
Burns is chairman of the Senate Interior Appropriations subcommittee, which oversees funding for Indian programs at the Interior Department and the Indian Health Service.
