Pala Band claims small victory in landfill fight

The Pala Band of Mission Indians claimed victory on Wednesday when an air-quality permit application for a controversial landfill was canceled.

The tribe has been fighting the proposed Gregory Canyon dump for several years. The landfill would be located be located near two sacred sites and could affect the San Luis Rey River.

The backers of the landfill said the cancellation was insignificant and that it gives them more time to prepare a new application.
