The Pala Band of Mission Indians of California gained the support of a utility district in its fight against a landfill.
Another group, however, declined to take a position on the matter. Tribal leaders said they hoped to convince the San Luis Rey Watershed Council to oppose the landfill.
The tribe has a ballot initiative against the $60 million Gregory County landfill. The tribe is worried the project will pollute the reservation's sole source of water. The landfill would also be located near two sacred sites, Gregory Mountain and Medicine Rock.
