Calif. tribe wages campaign against planned landfill
Friday, March 26, 2004

The Pala Band of Mission Indians of California launched its campaign against a proposed landfill near its reservation.

The tribe is sponsoring an initiative that seeks to overturn voter approval of the Gregory Canyon landfill. The site is located near two sacred sites, Gregory Mountain and Medicine Rock.

The landfill was approved in 1994 with 68 percent of the vote. But the tribe says voters were misled and that the project will pollute the San Luis Rey River.
